Azeri ghazal

The capital of Azerbaijan resembles an amphitheater
In which I play the role of my life
Asleep in a Parisian hotel, I see
Ships leaving from the biggest port of the Caspian Sea
They carry the « Azar » the sacred fire,
The red of modernity and democracy.

I have trodden the green plains of Islam,
The carpets decorated with floral motifs
Came to life – the slivers of roses
Flew up to the firmament of the night
A ghazal came to me from a shady forest
I searched in the bright sky
The trace of the smiles that I had offered to your memory

In my dreams, men set a dune on fire
In « Yanardagh » (the mountain of fire)
And in the Azerbaijani waters, oil burns my eyes.
I wear arthalik on this day of Novrouz,
A shirt with red silk crossed buttons.
I am lounging on the beach of Abcheron
A fisherman with violet eyes has taken out of the fresh water
Three voblas that he will sell to the Russians tonight
The Guilavar (South wind) brings drops of regret to my lips.

The iron tree grows on the mountains of Talych.
In the region of Lenkaran, I lost some of my breath
In Neft dachlari, a city built in the middle of the sea,
A few meters from this beach lit by eternal snows
Of a mountain climbed by the heroes of this country,
The old women spy on the travelers through the chebeke,
These traditional grills at the windows,
Which allow to spy discreetly the life of the others

The capital of Azerbaijan resembles an amphitheater
In which I play the role of my life
Icazə verin, sizi valsa dəvət edim

(I’ve come to beg you for a waltz)

Asleep in a Parisian hotel, I see
Ships leaving the largest port in the Caspian Sea
They carry the « Azar » the sacred fire,
The licorice taste of freedom, the dusty perfume of love

And lines of men and women bathe and look at me
I open my eyes to the lights of the dusty night
Far from the mountains of Azerbaijan, my life is fading
It is this thread passed to the spinning wheel, which ends up breaking
By dint of being put back to work, then my courage
When I close my eyes, I travel through the Azerbaijani lands
In search of the most fragrant roses, in search of
The ghazal that will break my heart
