Beggars and Nations

I saw the cathedrals ravaged by shadows
The bells tint the night with their haunted light
I saw the city open up like a flaming crater
And your beautiful face float above our hearts

I saw the underworld applauding beggars
Who laughed like branches caught in the wind
I have seen the underworld applaud nations
Who fought in the mist, I saw the brightness of their banners

I walked in your footsteps, smelled the perfume of violence
That reeked in the air and spilled into the windows
I followed the path of the poet, far from the lights of the cities
And I drowned in an ocean of political smoke

I saw five hundred days your look on the foam
The boat of my conscience had capsized, the storm
Churning the sea like a sun driven mad by the wind
I saw five hundred days the sky melting on poetry

Like an angel struck by the consciousness of death
I saw the cathedrals ravaged by the shadows
I saw the underworld applauding beggars, nations
I followed the path of the poet, the irresistible ascension
